Phi Lambda Sigma is the international pharmacy leadership society. Our mission is to support pharmacy leadership commitment by recognizing leaders and fostering leadership development.

Authored by Faith Lanuzo, PharmD Candidate of the Gamma Zeta Chapter

As the month closes out, I wanted to bring awareness to October as the Mental Health Awareness month. It’s that time of the year where we all remember that oh yeahpharmacists and pharmacy students are human, too!

Yes, we are all aware of the innate grittiness of the pharmacy professional– managing patient loads, verifying orders, counseling patients, studying, precepting students, attending lectures, giving lectures, more studying, attending meetings, resolving conflict, and did I mention studying? Both pharmacist and student alike are vulnerable to the dangers of healthcare worker burnout. It’s time the profession of pharmacy prioritize mental health, not just in the month of October, but throughout the year.

The next time you have a little break, think about going on a walk or stretching with your PLS pals!

Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Gamma Zeta Chapter recognized this need and sought to take care of their student body one step at a time.

Get up! Get out!

We spend so much of our time sitting down. It’s important to get up and get the blood flowing! Since the best way to move is with your buddies, Gamma Zeta kicked off their mental health focus by hosting a campus walk between classes.

Streeeetch!

For our next mental health event, we had one of our faculty members, also a gifted and certified yoga teacher, lead our faculty and students in a flow during a lunch break. The weather was beautiful and the re-centering was much-needed!

Gamma Zeta led the way for mental health by inviting a certified yoga instructor to lead a short yoga and relaxation break for Palm Beach University students and faculty.

There’s plenty of ways to recenter yourself and take care of your mental health. It doesn’t have to be anything grand, but it works best if it’s done regularly and friends certainly help! The next time you have a little break, think about going on a walk or stretching with your PLS pals. You can even turn it into an event for the whole school!
